One study pointed out that there was significant heterogeneity across different types of usual source of care (Lambrew et al. 1996). Individuals who had a regular doctor had a different care-seeking pattern from those who had a site as their regular source of care. Also, they found that the comparative advantage of having a regular doctor over having a regular site was diminished when nonmainstream sites (emergency rooms, outpatient departments, and family health centers) were excluded from the analysis. Another study found that the contribution of a regular doctor to consumers'' perception of access was marginal when optimal primary care was provided at a site (Stewart et al. 1997).

The Midwest Business Group on Health (MBGH), a prominent, non-profit business health coalition based in Chicago, and DoctorQuality, a leading provider of healthcare quality and patient safety services, have agreed to jointly sponsor a project to help consumers choose their doctors.The initiative, called "The Doctor Data Project," will assess the impact and usability of doctor ratings and other health information for employees of selected member employers and local coalitions.MBGH has been instrumental in promoting value purchasing of healthcare services by employers, and for striving to improve the quality of care. In 1998, the MBGH Consumer Information and Education Committee began phase one of the Doctor Data Project to assess the ability of the marketplace to provide employees with desired information about individual doctors.
